FORT MYERS, Fla. - After winning the doubles point to start the match, the Middle Tennessee State Blue Raider women's tennis squad was unable to hold off a tough Minnesota Golden Gopher team in a 4-2 loss to end the opening week of the season.
Middle Tennessee claimed the doubles point for the second match in a row in a tiebreak on court two when the veteran duo of Alessia Truden and Rutuja Chaphalkar moved their overall record to 2-0 on the year with a 7-6 (7-5) win over Yinong Ma and Jeselle Ante. Ilaria Sposetti and Cassidy Mataia also moved to 2-0 on the season with a 6-4 win over Sofia Pinto and Anlin Xie on court three.
In singles, Lena Peyer won her first match of the year over Minnesota's Anlin Xie. The sophomore won a team-high 11 singles matches last season for the Blue Raiders and today's win over Xie is the
third win in her career over a player from a Power 4 Conference school.
Quote from Coach Tayo Bailey-Duvall
"We had a battle today and I am proud of the fight we put up," said Bailey-Duvall. "Against a team we haven't seen before, we put ourselves in good positions to get the win, but didn't get the conversions. We were challenged and continued to rise when needed. Though we didn't win, we had a good start to the season. We're looking forward to making some slight improvements as we prepare for Louisville on Friday."
