MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – The Middle Tennessee women's tennis team (1-2) claimed its first victory of the 2025 season today against the Louisville Cardinals (1-1) in the program's home opener at the Adams Tennis Complex.
Due to illness, Louisville was only able to field five courts, resulting in a point for the Blue Raiders via forfeit to open the match. MTSU took the doubles point over the Cardinals by claiming the top-seeded match. Alessia Truden and Rutuja Chaphalkar remained unbeaten in doubles through the first three matches of the season with a 6-4, clinching victory over Louisville's Alice Otis and Elisabeth Iila. The No. 2 seed match featuring Ilaria Sposetti and Cassidy Mataia was left unfinished with the Blue Raider pairing leading 5-2.
In singles play, Middle Tennessee clinched the match with a pair of wins by Truden and Sposetti, sealing a 4-1 result and the Blue Raiders' first victory of the 2025 season. Both Truden and Sposetti were forced into a third set by the Cardinals' top two singles players, Otis and Elena Noguero, but both ultimately secured their first singles win this spring, each by a score of 6-2.
Quote from Coach Bailey-Duvall
"Today was a solid first win for us. Louisville is always a pretty good team and we expected to have to earn each point, and I am proud of the way my ladies fought. When momentum shifted a little, we did not get frazzled, but dug deep and got back on track. Looking forward to using this momentum on Sunday against UTC."
Next Up
The Blue Raiders will continue their first homestand of the 2025 season with a matchup against the Chattanooga Mocs on Sunday, Jan. 26 at 11 a.m. at the Adams Tennis Complex.
