Blue Raiders Come Up Short at Rice, 66–59

HOUSTON, Texas — Middle Tennessee (2–2) faced a challenging road matchup on Saturday afternoon, ultimately falling to Rice (2–1) by a score of 66–59.
The Blue Raiders established an early 9–4 lead midway through the first quarter behind baskets from senior Alayna Contreras and freshman guard Carsyn Swaney. The second quarter remained competitive, featuring five lead changes and four ties. Freshman Blair Baugus played a crucial role in regaining momentum for MTSU, contributing a series of inside baskets and two free throws that tied the game at 17–17. Rice took a 29–27 lead going into halftime.
In the fourth quarter, Baugus knocked down a three-pointer at the 6:44 mark to cut the deficit to 50–47. Moments later, Swaney's steal led to a transition layup by Macie Phifer, giving Middle Tennessee a 51–50 lead.
The Blue Raiders continued to battle until the end, with Baugus scoring her final field goal with just seven seconds remaining. However, Rice secured the victory at the free-throw line.
Baugus recorded a career-high 22 points and seven rebounds, while Contreras added 10 points, and sophomore Savannah Davis contributed 13 points off the bench.
