LEESBURG, Fla. — Middle Tennessee Softball split their two games on Opening Day, defeating Rutgers in their second game and dropping the first game to Louisville.
The Blue Raiders (1-1, 0-0) were firing on all cylinders vs. Rutgers (1-1, 0-0), winning the game by a score of 8-1. Ansley Blevins drove in Macie Harter on an RBI-double in the top of the first inning and the Blue Raiders never looked back. In the fourth inning, Middle Tennessee softball batted through the lineup that featured five straight runners reaching base. The inning saw a two-run home run from Ava Brooks and Macie Harter drove in two more on a triple in her collegiate debut. Harter reached home three times in the game, the first time a Blue Raider has done that since February of 2023.
On the mound, Jesyne Espinal had the best performance of her collegiate career throwing 6.0 innings while allowing just one run. The sophomore had never pitched more than 3.1 innings prior to tonight's stellar performance. Tori Coffman entered the game in the seventh inning to finish off the Scarlet Knights. When asked about her performance, Jesyne Espinal said the following: "It was awesome to see all the hard work we put in during the offseason pay off today, it was a great win all-around."
In the first game vs. Louisville (1-1, 0-0), freshman Jana Want made an immediate impact for the Blue Raiders by recording a double and a home run in her first two collegiate at bats. Addy Edgmon also recorded two hits in her first game wearing blue.
