Leila Ammon dominates in complete game
STARKVILLE, Miss. — Middle Tennessee softball recorded its first ranked win since the 2023 season as the Blue Raiders took down No. 19 Mississippi State, 3-2.
Leila Ammon dominated for the Blue Raiders (10-15, 1-2) as she shut down the high-powered Bulldog offense (22-4, 3-0) with a complete game. Mississippi State averaged more than seven runs per game prior to this contest. Ammon allowed just two runs while recording three strikeouts and lowered her season ERA to 2.81. Her 2.81 ERA is the best among Conference USA freshmen.
The MTSU offense started slow but delivered when it mattered most. Their first hit came in the fifth inning on a single by Lexi Medlock, but the Blue Raiders were unable to capitalize. In the sixth, Ava Tepe opened the inning by getting hit by a pitch for the second time of the game. Addy Edgmon followed with a rocket over the right-field wall to tie the game. After not hitting a home run in her first 61 games, Edgmon has now hit four in the last six.
In the seventh, Sabria Ritto led off with her first career hit, an infield single. With two outs and Ritto still on first, Ava Brooks kept the inning alive with a single, moving Ritto into scoring position. Then, Ava Tepe played the hero with a well-hit RBI single to left field, scoring Ritto on a bang-bang play at home plate.
Ammon then made easy work of the Bulldogs in the seventh, retiring them in order, including a nice play on a ball hit up the middle. The Blue Raiders improved to 6-0 when holding their opponents to two or fewer runs.
One key area where MTSU thrived was defense, turning two crucial double plays.
When asked about her performance, Ammon said the following: "It's an incredible feeling knowing my teammates have my back, just like I have theirs. This was a true team win, and I couldn't be prouder of everyone."
