Blue Raiders drop season finale, 4-0, to Rice

HOUSTON – The Middle Tennessee women's tennis team fought hard, but dropped the regular season finale match, 4-0, at Rice Saturday afternoon. The Blue Raiders closed out the 2024-25 regular season campaign with a 16-7 record, their best mark since the 2017-18 season.
In doubles competition, Rice took court three first with a 6-0 set but found more fight from the Blue Raiders on the top two courts. The second doubles tandem of Alessia Truden and Rutuja Chaphalkar had secured a late break over the Owls, leading 5-3. Eloise Swarbrick and Lena Peyer battled hard on court one but were secure a break-back, falling 6-3 for Rice to win the doubles point.
Moving to singles play, Truden was able to secure a first set on court one, breaking at 6-5 to take the first at court one. The other first sets went the way of Rice, who capitalized first at court three, where Peyer fell 6-1, 6-3. Ilaria Sposetti dropped her match next at court two, 6-3, 6-1. The match was clinched at court four for Rice, with Cassidy Mataia fighting hard in the first set but falling 7-5, 6-3.

Middle Tennessee will next head to Lynchburg, Va. to compete at the Conference USA Championship. The tournament kicks off Wednesday, April 16 at host Liberty.
