MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Middle Tennessee Softball (19-26) swept Memphis (17-33) in both games of today's doubleheader. The Blue Raiders defeated the Tigers by a score of 5-4 in game one and a score of 7-6 in game two.
The Blue Raiders got off to a slow start in game one; the Tigers jumped out to an early lead that Memphis would hold onto until the sixth inning when the Middle Tennessee bats came alive. The Blue Raiders were down three runs entering the bottom of the sixth, when Elle Hildreth sparked the Middle Tennessee offense with a solo home run to start the Blue Raider scoring.
Onnika Spencer, Lexi Medlock and Avery Wynne would tack on three more runs for Middle Tennessee in the bottom of the sixth to enter the final frame with a one-run lead. The Tigers answered in the top of the seventh, tying the game once again, but Ansley Blevins sent her 11th home run of the season over the wall to walk off game one for Middle Tennessee.
Braelyn Hall got the start in the circle for game one, striking out three in 5.0 innings of work. Halle Klaiber entered the game in relief, closing out the final two innings, striking out one and recording the win to move to 4-3 on the season.
Game two saw the bats get hot early; 11 total runs crossing the plate in just the first three innings of play. Memphis jumped out to an early lead again, but Middle Tennessee was quick to respond. The Tigers had a 3-0 lead heading into the bottom of the second, but Spencer and Lucie McDonald would strike in the bottom of the frame with solo homers to bring the Blue Raiders within one run.
Memphis scored another three runs in the top of the third, but Middle Tennessee would answer with three of its own; Blevins knocked an RBI single and Spencer shot off her second home run of the game for two runs. Two more Blue Raider runs would cross the plate due to a Tiger error and a sac fly off the bat of Adaeze Nwogbo to push Middle Tennessee to its second win over Memphis of the day.
Elle Hildreth got the start in the circle for game two, pitching 2.1 innings before Tori Coffman would enter the game in relief and record the win.
