MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - Middle Tennessee's offense sprung back to life Saturday during a 66-48 win over Southern in the opening game of the Emerald Coast Classic at Murphy Center.
Five of MT's first six shots went through the net as the Blue Raiders shot 43 percent (23-of-53) from the field. Nine different MT players scored in the first half, while Marcus Tarrance, Perrin Buford and Edward Simpson recorded career highs in the scoring column.
Tarrance poured in 18 points off the bench on a perfect 5-of-5 from the field (career high), including 2-of-2 from three-point range. The senior guard also pulled down a career-best six rebounds.
Starting for the first time wearing blue and white, Buford and Simpson displayed great energy and provided the home team with plenty of scoring. Buford ended up with nine points (4-of-5) including his first 3-pointer, while Simpson reached double figures with 10 points (4-of-6) in 29 minutes. Simpson also knocked down two 3-pointers.
Buford gave the Blue Raiders a jolt with a basket on back-to-back possessions in the early minutes of the game. Tarrance then replaced Buford shortly after and immediately drained a 3-pointer and two free throws, guiding the Blue Raiders to a 13-5 advantage at the first media timeout.
A 10-0 run midway through the first half, capped by another Tarrance trey, put the Blue Raiders up 28-11 with 7:46 left in the half. MT's lead wound up hovering around 10 points leading up to a 38-27 halftime advantage.
Coming out of the locker room, Simpson knocked down his pair of 3-pointers as MT used an 8-0 burst to go ahead 46-27 with 18 minutes to go.
The lead swelled to as much as 23 points with 12 minutes left following Buford's trey. Southern managed a 7-0 run a few minutes later, but MT quickly recovered and cruised the rest of the way.
MT held the visitors to 33 percent shooting on the day and limited the Jaguars to only five field goals in the second half.
The Blue Raiders also controlled the glass, outrebounding the Jaguars by a 40-27 margin and posted 11 second chance points.
Middle Tennessee (2-1) continues play in the Emerald Coast Classic when it hosts Northern Arizona on Tuesday night. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 PM inside Murphy Center.
