MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Middle Tennessee played to a 2-2 draw against Alabama on Sunday night in the team's home opener.
The Blue Raiders came back twice to send the game to overtime; the squads third overtime game in three games to sit at 1-1-1 on the season.
"We knew coming in that Alabama was going to be a strong team and they are definitely a strong team," Head Coach Aston Rhoden said. "I was pleased with the effort that our girls showed, I was definitely pleased with the character. We were a goal down both times but we came back and took it to overtime and had a chance to win the game."
In the sixth minute Kelsey Brouwer came out strong on a breakaway that gave Alabama a penalty kick that went wide right.
Twenty-one minutes into the game the Crimson Tide had an opportunity after the ball was deflected off a shot but Amalie Anderdal slid in and saved the shot before the ball crossed the line. The two teams went into the second half scoreless with just five shots a piece.
"The defenders have been playing strong enough and that has been giving us time to get on the attack," Rhoden said. "We still have some work to do because this is our third overtime game in a row and we need to turn things around."
Just seconds into the second half the Crimson Tide's Theresa Diederich struck a shot from the top of the box to give Alabama the 1-0 lead.
The Blue Raiders quickly equalized as Peyton McCollum sent a ball to Grace Summers who sent the ball to the back of the net.
The 82nd minute brought excitement as MT went down 2-1 when Alabama's Laura Lee Smith finished a cross from Diederich. Within 15 seconds Grace Summers took a shot from 35 yards out that scored in the top-right corner to tie the game 2-2. The two goals in the game puts Summers at four on the season and eleven in her career at MT.
In overtime the Blue Raiders recorded three shots but were unable to put the game away as the game finished a draw.
Brouwer collected a career high 14 saves for the Blue Raiders in net which the second-most saves in a game in MT history. With a team save in the game, the Blue Raiders tied a school record for most saves in a game at 15 total; tying a record set in 1996 against Wofford.
"Kelsey was very solid in goal, she had two big saves and the rest were routine but she was very confident tonight," Rhoden said.
MT hits the pitch again when it hosts the Blue Raider Classic next weekend with a game against USF on Friday, September 5th at 7 p.m.
