MT Falls to Dartmouth on Day One of SHU Classic

SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - The Middle Tennessee volleyball team (3-8) fell in five sets to Dartmouth (7-1) Friday evening at Walsh Gymnasium. MT will return to the court tomorrow at 1 p.m., against Fordham before wrapping up its weekend versus host Seton Hall at 6 p.m.
Junior Chelsea Ross led with a game-high 20 kills to go along with 17 digs for her second-straight double-double. Sophomore Jazmyne Johnson finished with 14 kills and five swats while freshman Jacqueline Lux led with a game-leading 23 digs.
Freshman Haley Morton paced the Blue Raiders with 25 assists and senior Monét Marshall tallied a team-best seven blocks.
The Blue Raiders strung together a 7-3 run while tied 8-8 in the first set to take a commanding 15-11 advantage after Johnson and Marshall chipped in with a kill and a block assist, while Morgan St. Germain recorded an ace to cap the run.
Dartmouth would cut the lead to two, 22-20, but MT scored the final three points to go into the second set with a 1-0 lead.
The Big Green jumped out to a 17-10 lead in the second set before a 4-1 run by the Blue Raiders cut the lead to four 18-14. However, the Big Green scored seven of the next eight points to take the frame, 25-15, and tie the match 1-1.
Both teams went back and forth early in the third frame before Dartmouth went ahead by three 9-6. MT took the lead for good after putting together a 10-4 run that gave the Blue Raiders a 16-13 advantage that they wouldn't relinquish and go into the fourth frame up 2-1.
MT stormed out to a 14-6 lead in the fourth set and would eventually take a 19-10 advantage for their largest lead of the frame. However, the Big Green rallied back with a 13-3 run to go ahead by one 23-22.
Ross' kill tied the set 23-23, but Dartmouth finished the set on a 3-1 run to capture the stanza 26-24 to tie the match 2-2 going into the fifth set.
Dartmouth would take an 8-2 lead in the final set before MT clawed its way back throughout the fifth frame as the Blue Raiders would cut the lead to one, 14-13, thanks to consecutive kills by Ross. That would be the final point MT scored as Dartmouth captured the match on the ensuing rally off an attack error.
