MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – The Middle Tennessee softball team (9-8, 0-3 C-USA) suffered a 12-2 setback to UTEP (6-19, 3-0 C-USA) Sunday afternoon at Helen of Troy Softball Field.
Freshman Morgan Harris finished 2-for-3 from the plate with an RBI, while junior Carlie Jenkins accounted for the team's other RBI. Freshman Cor'Nisha Birdsong tallied two hits while finishing the weekend with a .500 batting clip (4-for-8) to lead the team over the weekend.
Sophomores Austyn Whaley and Lauren Riddell each finished the day with hits as well.
Senior Caitlin McClure recorded the loss for her first setback of the season falling to 2-1 in her fifth start of the year. She pitched just briefly, allowing five runs to the hot UTEP bats, while junior Kelci Cheney and sophomore Megan Chocallo pitched the final 3.1 innings of the contest. Cheney allowed seven runs, which only two were earned.
MT struck first in the top of the first frame thanks to a Jenkins groundout that scored Birdsong from third. Birdsong led off the inning with a single before advancing to third off a sacrifice bunt that was laid down by senior Alma Cortez.
Later in the inning, MT had loaded the bases with three straight walks, but couldn't take advantage of the opportunity.
But much like the first game yesterday, the Miners scored early with five runs in the bottom of the first thanks to two homers. UTEP then added two more runs in the following inning to take a 7-1 advantage.
The Blue Raiders were able to add a run in the top of the third as Harris doubled to left field to drive in Riddell from second, but it wasn't enough as UTEP tacked on five more runs in the fifth to lead 12-2 the rest of the way for the victory in five innings.
UTEP took advantage of their opportunities with runners in scoring position as they finished 11-for-34 (.324) over the three games, while MT only hit .214 (6-for-28) when threatening to score. MT also only came away with five stolen bases as Birdsong finished 5-for-5 in stealing attempts.
The Blue Raiders will have a quick turnaround as they will head to Las Cruces, N.M. for a 1 p.m., matchup against New Mexico State on Tuesday.
