Dupree's Career Day Leads to Sweep at Charlotte
4/18/2015 9:06:00 PM | Baseball
First-place Raiders have won six straight
CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Middle Tennessee extended its win streak to a season-high six games by claiming both contests of Saturday's doubleheader over Charlotte in comeback fashion, 7-6 and 8-5. The Blue Raiders improve to 23-16 overall and 14-4 in league play while keeping hold of first place in the Conference USA standings.
It's the first road sweep since March 28-29, 2009 for the Middle Tennessee program, and it all happened during a span of just over 24 hours.
The Blue Raider bats delivered six home runs, the most during a three-game series this season, while combining for seven runs and nine hits in the ninth inning. MT also improved to 22-4 when scoring three or more runs in a game.
Sophomore Kevin Dupree had a career performance in Saturday's first game, clubbing his first two home runs of his career while tying his career highs in hits (three) and RBI (four). Dupree has been on fire this week, combining to go 10-for-14 (.714) at the plate with four consecutive multi-hit games.
MT's top hitter junior Ronnie Jebavy also had a big day posting five hits in nine at-bats, including two doubles and a home run. Jebavy has now hit safely in 33 games with 22 multi-hit efforts and four home runs. The speedster also swiped stolen base number 20, becoming the first Blue Raider to steal 20 bags since Matt Ray in 2007 (24).
There were plenty of other contributors on Saturday, including senior Jake Ingold (3-for-8; HR, 2 RBI) who homered for the second day in a row and senior Jared Allen (3-for-8; 3 RBI) who raised his team-high RBI total to 39.
The Niners roughed up the MT starters, but the bullpen was lights out again to hold on for the pair of come-from-behind victories on Saturday.
Gm 1: Middle Tennessee 7, Charlotte 6
For the second time in less than 24 hours, Middle Tennessee overcame a two-run deficit with one out in the top of the ninth to conquer Charlotte.
Trailing 6-4, the Blue Raiders pushed three runs across after loading the bases in their final plate appearance.
Allen and Ingold sparked the one-out rally with sharp line drives to left. Then, MT got some help when Austin Bryant's fielder's choice ground ball to second was thrown past the covering shortstop, allowing each runner to advance safely. Kaleb King stepped up with a big single past the third baseman, scoring two runs to tie it 6-6, and Dupree followed suit with a single to the right side for the go-ahead RBI.
Garrett Ring (1.2 IP) was credited with the win on the mound and Sam Alton picked up his second save as a host of arms kept MT close.
The Blue Raiders jumped out front 1-0 early when Jebavy connected on a solo home run in the first.
However, the Niners responded with four runs on three hits off starter Nate Hoffmann (5.0 IP, 6 H, 5 R, 2 K, 2 BB) in the bottom half.
Hoffmann was forced to battle, something he's grown accustomed to this season, and he didn't shy away. After giving up a leadoff home run in the third, the right-hander buckled down and retired the next nine out of 10 batters faced.
Dupree's first home run proved to be an interesting turn of events in the fourth.
With King on base, Dupree launched a moonshot over the fence to deep right, but it was initially ruled foul. After a quick meeting between the umpires the call was reversed, and both Raiders were sent back out to round the bases for a second time to trim the Charlotte lead to 5-3.
The Niners added one more in the sixth and MT responded with a run in the eighth to set up the final inning.
Each team tallied 10 hits and MT stranded 12 runners. The Blue Raider batters were also plunked by a pitch five times, setting a new season high.
Gm 2: Middle Tennessee 8, Charlotte 6
Charlotte got out to a quick 5-0 lead after two and held Middle Tennessee hitless for three frames, but the Blue Raiders sprung to life and racked up 14 hits.
MT used a big sixth inning to get within a run, scored one in the seventh and eighth to tie, and then sealed the game with two more runs in the ninth.
With Adkins on first and two gone in the top of the sixth, Jebavy connected on his 11th double to put two in scoring position for Allen, who followed with an infield single that scored both runs to make it 5-2.
Next up was Ingold who flexed his muscle by sending a ball soaring over the centerfield fence, and all of a sudden MT was within a run, 5-4.
The bullpen showed up once more in this one, as freshman Blake Stansberry took over for starter Tyler Troutt in the fifth (4.1 IP, 5 H, 5 R, 3 ER, 3 BB). Stansberry inherited two runners but left unscathed. The sidewinder cruised through 2.2 innings by retiring every batter he faced.
Sophomore Brad Jarreau tied it 5-5 in the seventh on his first hit of series. He roped a double down the left-field line and Adkins scored all the way from first after he was moving on the pitch.
Each team tacked on a run in the eighth to keep it knotted at 6-6.
The ninth-inning trend continued as MT's top three batters in the order singled with one away. Allen came up next and lifted a sacrifice fly to the track in center, allowing each runner to advance and giving MT the lead for good.
The final run came across when catcher's interference was called with Kevin Sullivan at the plate.
Alton registered his fifth win after throwing the eighth, while senior closer Nathan Foriest picked up save number six.
