Blue Raiders Place Second
Final Results
COLUMBIA, Mo. – On a course where the Blue Raiders set four school records a year ago, the team has established a new record again this year in one of those categories at the Johnie Imes Invitational.
In last season's appearance at The Club at Old Hawthorne, Middle Tennessee had a 54-hole total of 862 (-2). The record stood until May, when the team carded a seven-under 857 at the C-USA Championship.
The Blue Raiders fired a final round 282 (-6) today to finish at 14-under par (282-286-282=850) for the tournament, good for a second place finish behind only tournament host Missouri.
The 54-hole total of 850 (-14) posted by the Blue Raiders will enter the record books as the lowest score in school history. This also marks the first time in school history in which the team scored under par in all three rounds.
"Breaking a school record is awesome and we really played great all three rounds," head coach Chris Adams said. "Missouri just played better. They were coming off of a win entering this tournament so they were already riding high and this is their tournament and home course so they had a little bit of home-field advantage."
In addition to the new school record, two Blue Raiders also set new career lows for both 18- and 54-hole totals.
Senior Maddie Denton shot a 66 in round one and finished at one-under 215 (66-78-71) while freshman Jenna Burris shot a 71 in the first and third rounds on her way to an even-par 216 (71-74-71). Denton finished tied for 12th in the field while Burris tied for 15th.
Joining Denton in a tie for 12th was Emily Miller (75-71-69=215), while Avery George (74-71-71=216) matched Burris' place in a tie for 15th.
Samantha Gotcher rounded out the lineup with a three-round score of one-over 217 (71-70-76). Her score placed her in a tie for 20th, leaving each team member in the top 20 of the final standings.
"Everyone was kind of pressing a little bit at the end trying to catch Missouri and we made a couple of mistakes, but overall I'm very pleased with our performance," Adams added. "We're definitely headed in the right the direction."
The next stop for the Blue Raiders will be the CSU Wendy's Invitational in Charleston, S.C. The tournament will be hosted by Charleston Southern University at Rivertowne Country Club on Oct. 5-6.
