Softball Drops Series to WKU

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – The Middle Tennessee softball team dropped two games of a doubleheader on Sunday, March 12 to WKU. The Raiders fell 6-4 and 2-0 as WKU swept the series, winning all three games. Middle moves to 9-11 on the year, 0-3 in C-USA play.
Game 1 – WKU 6, MT 4
The Raiders got off to a rough start in game one, walking the first two batters and then allowing a three-run home run with only one out. Another walk followed by a double gave the Toppers a 4-0 lead at the end of first frame.
Middle was able to cut WKU's lead in half in the bottom half of the inning. Summer Burgess and Precious Birdsong started the batting order with singles to left field. Kaylyn Slatter drove in the runs on a huge single to right field.
WKU upped their lead by adding two more runs in the top of the third. A leadoff single was driven in by a double to left center. Another single, this time up the middle, brought another run across to make it 6-2 in favor of WKU.
In the bottom of the sixth the Raiders were able to push two more runs across. Morgan Harris and Kristin Uselton started with back-to-back singles up the middle and to right field. Burgess then singled past second to load the bases. Up next, Birdsong hit a ball off the wall in centerfield for a two-run double.
Down two, Danielle Munoz struck a leadoff double to left field to start the bottom of the seventh. The next three Raiders were retired for a 6-4 WKU win.
Gretchen Greer, Pattie Ruth Taylor and Megan Chocallo each saw time in the circle with Greer recording the loss to move to 3-2 on the season.
Offensively, the Raiders accumulated 12 hits, matching a season-high. Burgess was 3-for-4 while Birdsong went 4-for-4 with 2 RBI.
Game 2 – WKU 2, MT 0
Cori Jennings started in the circle in game two and struck out seven in the first five innings of action.
WKU cracked the scoreless tie in the top of the sixth. A single to right field followed by a walk gave the Hilltoppers two base runners with one out. Brittany Vaughn then cracked a double to the wall in right center to give WKU a 2-0 lead.
The Raiders had a chance to tie it in the bottom half of the inning as Lauren Payne reached on a fielder's choice and Burgess singled to the pitcher. Birdsong then hit a ball to the fence in left field but WKU made an over the shoulder grab and was able to double up the Raiders at second base to end the inning.
WKU took down MT in order in the bottom of the seventh to take the 2-0 win.
Jennings moved to 5-6 on the year taking the loss in the circle, but recording a season-high eight strikeouts in the effort.
Samantha Vacko and Slatter recorded two of the Raiders three hits in the contest.
MT will have a quick turnaround, hosting Austin Peay at the Blue Raider Softball Field on Tuesday, March 14 at 5pm and then hosting No. 2 Auburn of the SEC on Wednesday, March 15 at 6pm.
