Raiders drop game two against Roadrunners

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Middle Tennessee struggled at the plate to get production on the way to a 11-1 loss to UTSA on a sunny Saturday in Reese Smith Jr. Field.
The loss for the Blue Raiders evens the weekend series at one game apiece.
The Roadrunners struck first in the opening frame, hitting a home run on the third pitch of the game off Carson Lester. They jumped out to a three run lead in the third, before Middle Tennessee scored their first run.
Lester finished the day tossing 1-1/3 innings, allowing two earned runs on three hits against 10 batters faced.
In the bottom of the fourth, senior second baseman Ryan Kemp cut into the UTSA lead with a solo home run of his own to left field, scoring the only run of the game for Middle Tennessee and trimming the deficit to 3-1.
"After we hit the home run, it stayed 3-1 for a long time and it was a manageable game," said head coach Jim McGuire. "But we could never bunch anything together, and their starter did a good job preventing that."
However, the wheels came off for MT in the sixth as the Roadrunners scored six runs, taking a 9-1 lead.
"We weren't great offensively, and then we gave up the big inning," said McGuire. "That's what really hurt us."
While the MT bats recorded nine hits as a team, junior left fielder Blake Benefield had a strong day at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a double.
Andy Wright pitched extremely well in his outing out of the bullpen. The redshirt sophomore out of Chattanooga threw a spotless ninth inning, including two strikeouts.
The rubber match between the Blue Raiders and Roadrunners is scheduled for 1:00 p.m in Reese Smith Jr. Field. Fans who cannot attend are encouraged to tune into the Blue Raider Network on 101.9/100.5 WGNS.
