Pitching Arms Shine Again for Blue Raiders

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Just as they did over the weekend event in Florida, Middle Tennessee (13-11) pitching arms helped the Blue Raiders cruise to a pair of wins against Wright State (6-9) in Wednesday's doubleheader.
The Blue Raiders took a lead after the first inning of the day, as Jocelynn De La Cruz singled home Sydney Heath, who had a base knock of her own before stealing second to move into scoring position.
In the second inning, Claire Smith scored the second run of the game on a Ryan King double. MT then added another insurance run in the sixth inning, when the Blue Raiders executed a double steal, sending Smith home to score.
Three runs proved to be more than enough run support for Corrina Dodd, who tossed a complete game shutout, striking out three and allowing just four hits. The freshman was able to keep her momentum going after a successful weekend at the USF-Clearwater Parks & Recreation Invitational.
In the second game of the doubleheader, the Blue Raider bats scored once in the second and third innings and notched three runs in the fourth and fifth innings to end the game early.
Savannah Freeman tallied the first run in the second, and Lexi Cushing was driven home by Claire Smith to give MT a 2-0 lead after three innings. Runs scored by Sydney Heath, Cuccia, and Keely McGee gave MT a 5-0 advantage after the fourth. Then, after Smith and Brooke McClure scored in the bottom of the fifth, Summer Burgess ended the game with a single, scoring Cameran McKenry.
In the circle for the Blue Raiders for game two was freshman Kailey Ahlstrom, who pitched five scoreless innings, giving up just one hit. She was perfect through the first three frames prior to giving up the only Wright State base knock of the second game in the fourth inning.
The Blue Raiders are headed to Memphis this weekend for the U of M Tournament against Indiana State and DePaul on Saturday, with action beginning at 9 AM against the Sycamores.
