Long, Burris lead talented lineup in fourth appearance at Verandah
Round 1 Pairings
FORT MYERS, Fla. – Postseason play has arrived for Middle Tennessee women's golf as head coach Chris Adams prepares to lead the Blue Raiders into the Conference USA Championship Monday morning in For Myers.
The league title is once again set be given out following 54 holes on the Old Orange course of the Verandah Club, a Par 72, 6,194-yard course.
Senior Hanley Long, a Conference USA Golfer of the Year candidate, will anchor the Middle Tennessee lineup sporting a league-best 72.3 stroke average on the season. Her national ranking of No. 111 slots her as highest ranking golfer in the field this week.
Joining her for a fourth trip to Verandah Club is fellow senior Jenna Burris, the low medalist at the 2017 edition of the Conference USA Championship. The pair have totaled six Top 10 finishes and three Top 5 finishes in six combined appearances at Verandah Club and helped the Blue Raiders to a team title as freshmen in 2016.
"I think the experiences and successes of Hanley and Jenna here on this course, as well as their leadership abilities, will be a great advantage for our team this week," Adams stated. "Even though there are some difficult holes here, there is a level of comfort with them because they know that there are holes you can score on and the greens are really rolling good."
Rounding out the lineup are a trio of talented underclassmen including sophomore Sophie Burks, who has the second best stroke average on the team this season at 74.0 strokes per round.
Freshman Catherine Caudill, who boasts a team-leading three rounds in the 60s this season, is making her first appearance in the Conference USA Championship.
Sophomore Caroline Caudill, like Burks, is making a return trip to Verandah Club after the pair both made the 2018 tournament squad as freshmen.
"We had had a great last couple of weeks of preparation and we are ready to compete," Adams stated "We like this course and are very comfortable here at Verandah and I think they are looking forward to getting started."
The Blue Raiders, ranked No. 66 nationally by Golfstat, are joined at the top of the field by a pair of their fellow annual C-USA frontrunners in No. 40 Old Dominion and No. 60 UTSA.
ODU and UTSA will be joined in the final group on day one by No. 57 Charlotte, a newcomer to the top of the league rankings in 2018-19.
Middle Tennessee tees off alongside No. 93 North Texas and No. 99 Marshall to open play on Monday.
Caroline Caudill will hit the tee box first on Monday, going off of No. 1 at 8:00 a.m. ET. Sister, Catherine, will follow her with Burris and Burks behind her while Long will tee it up last at 8:40.
