Omamyouwi named freshman of the year
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Middle Tennessee capped the Conference USA Indoor Track and Field Championships with four women's titles and the C-USA Male Freshman of the Year Sunday.
Erhire Omamyouwi was named C-USA Freshman of the Year after his strong showing as he finished second in the triple jump and the high jump.
Middle Tennessee did not utilize a full compliment of athletes for the meet but the female Blue Raiders that did compete turned in strong performances.
"The athletes we brought represented themselves and Middle Tennessee well," Middle Tennessee head coach Dean Hayes said. "We had several good performances and (Omamyouwi) getting freshman of the year was a good way for him to cap the indoor season. We had a few near misses on the men's side and the women were able to win four events, so we were pleased with that."
Esther Isa brought home two championships, winning the high jump with an effort of 1.78 meters, and the triple jump with a 13.09 effort.
Isa wasn't the only Blue Raider female competitor to win gold. Cecilia Francis won the 60-meter with a time of 7.46 and Eusila Chepkemei finished first in the 800-meter with a time of 2:10.65.
The men had several noteworthy performances, including four runner-up finishes. Omamyouwi and Benjamin Onyekwelu finished second and third, respectively, in the triple jump.
Middle Tennessee also placed two spots in the top six of the 400-meter as Jaquez Torian finished second with a 49.95, and Matthew Stewart was sixth with a time of 49.02.
Brian Rono was second in the 800-meter, and Middle Tennessee's 4X400 quartet of Pierre Nickson, Stewart, Rono and Torian was second with a time of 3:18.38.
Onyekwelu finished eighth in the 60-meter.
The Blue Raiders will turn their attention to the outdoor season which will culminate with Middle Tennessee hosting the C-USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in May.
