CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – Middle Tennessee took nine strokes off its first-round score but dropped one spot from 12th place to 13th Monday in the second round of the Chattanooga Classic at Council Fire Golf Club. Molly Bebelaar led the Blue Raiders with a score of 73 (+1) in the second round as MT recorded a team score of 301 (+13) and sits at 611 (+35) heading into the third round.
"We improved several shots as a team today by eliminating some big holes but just didn't make as many birdie putts," head coach Chris Adams said. "Molly and Catherine had good rounds today, and Matty continued her steady play as well. We will be ready for the last round tomorrow and hope for a move up in the standings."
Dealing with chilling winds in partly cloudy conditions, MT cut down on its collective holes over par, recording 25 on Monday after totaling 35 in Sunday's first round in an overall more consistent performance. The Blue Raiders carded seven birdies Monday, compared to 13 Sunday. No MT player finished the second round more than 6-over par after more than half the lineup did so in the first.
Madison Smith carded a 75 (+3) to end the day in a tie for 39th at 151 (+7). Caroline Caudill also ended the day in a tie for 39th after shooting a 78 (+6).
Bebelaar, Sophie Burks and Catherine Caudill round out the MT lineup in a tie for 63rd at 157 (+13) through two rounds. Bebelaar carded three birdies, the most by any Blue Raider on Monday, on her way to equaling the team's lowest round of the event. The younger Caudill birdied two holes while improving upon her first-round score by seven strokes to finish the round at 75 (+3). Burks birdied her first hole before a tough finish to the afternoon, ending the day with a score of 78 (+6).
The Blue Raiders' score of 301 was the 11th-lowest out of 20 teams in the second round. UTSA holds the team lead at 576 (E). UTSA's Hannah Holzmann leads the individual field at 139 (-5).
The third and final round begins Tuesday with tee times starting at 7:30 a.m. CT. Middle Tennessee's first tee time belongs to Catherine Caudill, who will tee off from hole 10 at 7:30 a.m.
