MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - Freshman Anyce Harvey had a great birthday at the dish for Middle Tennessee (19-30, 6-14 C-USA) on Saturday afternoon. The Trussville, Alabama, native scored a pair of runs and had a pair of hits to lead the Blue Raiders at the plate. Unfortunately, her team fell behind early and was unable to claw its way out of an early hole, falling 6-2 to LA Tech (34-17, 14-6) on Saturday at Blue Raider Softball Field.
With two outs and a full count in the top of the second, Lady Techster nine-hole hitter Kylie Neel lined a pitch into right field to score Katelin Cooper and drive in the game's first run. Two batters later, Amanda Gonzalez drove in another two-out run on a short line-drive into center field to put Louisiana Tech up 2-0.
Middle Tennessee cut the lead in half in the bottom of the second after Harvey scored following an infield single to start the inning. With Harvey standing on third and two out in the inning, junior first baseman Kaylee Richetto got her hands around quickly on an inside fastball and muscled it back up the box to make it a 2-1 game.
A third-inning home run and another two-out run in the fourth prompted the Blue Raider coaching staff to turn it over to sophomore Danielle Taitt in the circle in relief of starter Claire Woods. The freshman Woods allowed four runs on nine hits in 3.2 innings of work. Taitt, who tossed three scoreless innings out of the bullpen yesterday, lasted 2.1 innings and allowed one earned run before giving way to yesterday's starter Gretchen Mead, who tossed a scoreless seventh.
In the top of the sixth, Amanda Gonzalez tripled to lead off the inning and came in to score on an errant throw in from the outfield that ended up into the Blue Raider dugout to push the La Tech lead to 5-1. Later in the inning, a sacrifice fly by Lindsay Edwards made it a 6-1 game.
In the bottom of the sixth, Richetto drove in Harvey for the second time in the game with an RBI groundout to make it 6-2.
Offensively for the Blue Raiders, Harvey finished 2-for-3 with a pair of runs scored and Richetto had a productive day, going 1-for-2 with a walk and a pair of RBIs.
Lauren Menzina went the distance in the circle for Louisiana Tech, giving up two runs on six hits. Ann Gonzalez had another big afternoon at the plate for the Lady Techsters, going 4-for-5 with one RBI and finishing a home run short of the cycle.
