No. 18 Blue Raiders Sweep No. 37 Memphis and Alabama A&M on Senior Day
4/8/2022 6:50:00 PM | Men's Tennis
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – It was a special day on Friday afternoon inside the Adams Tennis Complex, as we honored Graduate Students Chris Edge and Stepan Holis for their contributions to Middle Tennessee State University and the Blue Raiders swept No. 37 Memphis 4-0 and Alabama A&M 7-0.
With the wins, No. 18 Middle Tennessee men's tennis moves to 23-3 on the season and has now won 17-straight matches, eight of those over ranked opponents. "Overall great day, 4-0 and 7-0, we knew Memphis was going to be a tall task because they've had our number for years. They've been an NCAA team for several years and to come out here and get a 4-0 win was great," Head Coach Jimmy Borendame said. "The 4-0 score was a little misleading, credit to the Memphis Tigers, they are a very strong team and having a great season. But obviously we're rolling and going to keep building on this, come back out on Monday and get ready for a tough Tulsa team on the road." Borendame said.
Against Memphis in doubles competition, the Blue Raiders retained their enthusiasm after the two-week break away from their last match, a 4-3 win over No. 42 Texas Tech. Edge and Holis made quick work of Pau Fanlo and Patrick Sydow on court No. 3 on their special day. As a duo, they move to 17-3 on the season and have won six of their last seven matches. The powerful duo of Stijn Slump and Pavel Motl clinched the doubles portion over Memphis, winning 7-6 (7-4) on court No. 2.
Middle Tennessee carried their momentum to singles, where MT won five of six first sets over the Tigers and did not let their foot off the gas.
Edge claimed his second individual win on his super senior day, defeating Jeremy Taylor in straight sets to put the Blue Raiders up two points.
Oskar Brostrom Poulsen and Francisco Rocha finished simultaneously to put the Raiders at the four-point threshold needed to clinch the match.
In the hour layover between matches, Coach Borendame grabbed the microphone and honored our two super seniors with a legendary speech listing their accolades and contributions to MT.
The second match versus Alabama A&M started 10 minutes later, the Blue Raiders claimed the doubles point in under 25 minutes with a 6-0 win on two and a 6-1 win on three. Edge and Holis picked up their 18th win as a duo and Motl and Slump racked up double digit victories together, winners of five-straight matchups.
Singles competition against the Bulldogs featured Freshman John Chin, Lucas Olivier, and Mattia Bernardi where all three student-athletes picked up two-set victories over their opponents. Chin moves to 7-0, Olivier and Bernardi improve to 5-0, together our four Freshman on campus have a combined record of 32-5 this Spring.
The Blue Raiders picked up points on all six singles courts en route to a 7-0 sweep of AAMU. This win marks the 10th sweep on the season for Middle Tennessee, seven of those have been complete 7-0 matches.
