#21 Middle Tennessee men’s tennis blanks USF 7-0 to begin weekend home stand
2/3/2023 8:38:00 PM | Men's Tennis
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. — It's been a pretty good week thus far for Blue Raider freshman Ondrej Horak. After being named the Conference USA athlete of the week on Wednesday, Horak helped the Blue Raiders clinch the doubles point and springboard them into what was perhaps their most dominant win of the season thus far in a 7-0 victory over the USF Bulls.
After both the two and three doubles pairings trailing 3-2 to the Bulls, the Blue Raiders fought back to claim wins on both courts and clinch Middle Tennessee's second doubles point in its' last three matches. Veterans Stijn Slump and Pavel Motl took four straight points to clinch the first doubles win of the evening. Within five second of USF's victory on court one, the Blue Raiders freshman pairing of Ondrej Horak and Marcel Kamrowski put it away over on three with a 6-4 win.
Horak picked right back up where he left off in doubles, clinching the second point of the match for Middle Tennessee with a 6-2, 6-2 win on court four to push his singles record to 5-0 on the season. Just after Horak's win on four, Pavel Motl made it 3-0 on six with a 6-1, 6-3.
Graduate Student Stijn Slump clinched it for the Blue Raiders with a 6-4, 6-4 win on court one. Also claiming victories for the Blue Raiders were freshman Marcel Kamrowski and Francisco Rocha, who each won 6-4, 7-6 (7-4 tiebreak) and 6-4, 6-3, respectively.
Perhaps the most highly anticipated matchup of the night was over on court three, as #60 Oskar Brostrom Poulsen took down #67 Alvin Tudorica in a sudden-death third set 6-2, 6-7 (3-7 tiebreak), 10-6 to earn a ranked win.
Head Coach Jimmy Borendame
On importance of a dominant win to start the weekend: "The doubles point was uneventful. We won, but it was pretty quiet. I'd like to see us do a better job of getting the crowd in it early, and we can do a better job of that and will need to Sunday. (USF) is a team that we've beat 4-3 the past two years and they've made the NCAA Tournament six years in a row, usually with an at-large berth. It's a good win and we'll put it in our back pocket and build some confidence."
On the Blue Raiders starting to find their stride in doubles: "In doubles, I'm a bit more of a micromanager. The thought in college tennis is doubles comes down to coaching and singles comes down to recruiting, so I've always had a strict way that I like the team to play. I felt like I was playing third doubles to play a certain way, and we've loosened the reins a little bit on them and I've taken myself off third doubles to give them more freedom, and I think that's a big thing. (Ondrej Horak and Marcel Kamrowski) are getting some big matches under their belt as freshman, so that's big as well."
On some of the individual accomplishments in singles play: "Ondrej (Horak) just keeps his head down and wins. He hasn't lost yet in singles, which is great. (Oskar Brostrom Poulsen) got a ranked win and played in front of his dad for the first time in a college match tonight. He does a great job with the crowd. Marcel (Kamrowski) always finds a way to hang around and competes really well. I didn't hit much on the seniors, but I have different expectations for those guys than the younger guys. They did a great job today."
Player's Perspective: Freshman Ondrej Horak
On winning C-USA athlete of the week and getting the win tonight: "It feels great, but I'm not necessarily here to win individual awards. I just want to do what I can to help my team win. It gives me great confidence moving forward into some of my upcoming matches."
On what has helped him to a 5-0 start in singles play: "In the fall, it was tough first playing college tennis and during winter break I got a lot of work in so that I could just come out here this spring and give it my best, and it's gone well so far."
Importance of finishing the weekend on a high note in Sunday's doubleheader: "It's huge. We were able to beat Duke and barely lost against Wake Forest, so to win tonight was big. Now we have to focus on these upcoming matches. We've been very good this season at home. The fan support has just been great."
