MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – The Middle Tennessee women's golf program is set to close out its first fall season under new head coach Lauren Wamsley at the Mercedes-Benz Collegiate this week. The tournament, hosted by the University of Tennessee, calls the Cherokee Country Club home and will run from Sunday, October 20 through Tuesday, Oct. 22.
THE FIELD
Middle Tennessee is one of 13 teams in the field of the tournament. Joining the Blue Raiders is host Tennessee, Charlotte, Kent State, Miami, Georgia State, East Carolina, Chattanooga, Eastern Kentucky, East Tennessee State, Memphis, UCF and Campbell. Last year's team champion UCF returns to the tournament along with its individual champion, Molly Smith.
THE BLUE RAIDERS
Middle Tennessee will send a five-player lineup to Knoxville, Tenn., along with an individual competitor for the first time since the opening tournament of the season.
In the top spot for the first time this season is Abbie Lee, who led the Blue Raiders at the Ron Moore Intercollegiate in Denver. She shot two rounds under par at the tournament to finish at 217 (+1) through the three days of competition. She is tied for the lead among the Blue Raiders with four rounds at par or better in her just nine rounds of competition, averaging 72.7 strokes on the season.
Nicole Johnson also had a season-best tournament at the Ron Moore, carding a career-low 69 on the final day of competition. She also finished at 217 (+1) for the tournament, her lowest 54-holes of her career by ten shots (previously was 228). She'll take the No. 2 spot for the first time this season at the Mercedes-Benz.
Kendall Maynard was able to bounce back after the Mason Rudolph Championship, finishing two shots better at the Ron Moore with a 225 (+9). She stayed relatively consistent throughout the rounds, shooting a 74, 75 and 76 on the weekend. Her scoring average remains slightly lower than last seasons, however, sitting steady at 74.9.
Lanie Campbell rebounded after a difficult opening two rounds at the Ron Moore, shooting her first round at par of the season on the final day. She is just one round at par or lower from matching last year's total with three. The junior continues to lead the team in total birdies, dropping in 36 already on the season and will slot in at the No. 4 spot on Rocky Top.
Ella Manley kicked off the Ron Moore with a stellar round at par and is tied for the team lead with four rounds at par or better. The sophomore was unable to find consistency throughout the final rounds in Denver, however, shooting a 78 (+6) and 81 (+9) on rounds two and three for her second-highest finish of the season. She'll start in the No. 5 spot at the Cherokee Country Club and will look to find some of the success she struck at the Cardinal Cup and the Mason Rudolph.
Jillian Bowman will compete in her first tournament since the beginning of the season, playing as an individual competitor at the Mercedes-Benz. At the Bettie Lou Evans Invitational, she carded a 239 (+23), with a 75 (+3) low round and five birdies total.
THE COURSE
The Cherokee Country Club was founded in 1907 just outside of Knoxville, Tenn. and boasts a classic 18-hole Donald Ross links style course. The course features elevated turtle greens, large green complexes with punch bowls and numerous hidden bunkers off tee shots.
THE TOURNAMENT
