No. 28 Blue Raiders wrap up three-match home swing with win over Texas Tech
3/1/2024 7:40:00 PM | Men's Tennis
Murfreesboro, Tenn.—The No. 28 Middle Tennessee State (11-7) men's tennis team's spirit wouldn't be dampened after mother nature ruined plans to play the first match on the new outdoor courts on the corner of the MTSU campus. The energy within the team remained high on Friday night, leading to the sixth ranked win of the year over a Power Five opponent in Texas Tech (6-6) 4-1 at the Adams Tennis Complex on Friday evening to cap off a three-match homestand.
Texas Tech took a dramatic doubles point, winning in a tiebreaker on three to clinch after Leo Raquin and Ondrej Horak came back from down 5-4 to take a 6-5 lead on court one for MTSU.
No. 33 Raquin carried the momentum from doubles over to the top singles spot, picking up his fourth ranked win of the year over Texas Tech's No. 85 Ollie Wallin 6-4, 6-3. Ondrej Horak moved into second on the team for MTSU in singles wins, racking up his eighth of the season on court three. Reigning Conference USA player of the week No. 107 Marcel Kamrowski defeated his first ranked opponent of the year for Middle Tennessee, defeating No. 91 Reed Collier 6-4, 6-1 on court two to clinch the come-from-behind win.
Head Coach Jimmy Borendame
"We've been doing so well in doubles. We'd won 14 out of 17 doubles points on the year coming into today. It just didn't sit well how doubles went. It just all crumbled and I thought we were going to roll with it. It's all about how we respond. We came out guns blazing and won five out of six first sets (in singles). This is a good win. They're tough and smoked us last year, so I'm really happy and we're thrilled for a weekend off."
Player's Perspective: Sophomore Marcel Kamrowski
"To be honest, I'm proud of myself for staying resilient to clinch the match. I think I played really good tennis, so I'm really happy with how I was able to play today."
