MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Following a successful weekend at the Bettie Lou Evans Invitational, which saw a T6 finish for Kendall Maynard and a ninth-place finish for the team, the Middle Tennessee women's golf program is set to travel back to Kentucky to compete. The Blue Raiders will compete in the Cardinal Cup, hosted by the University of Louisville at the University of Louisville Golf Club in Simpsonville, Ky.
THE FIELD
Middle Tennessee is one of 15 teams competing in the 2024 Cardinal Cup. Along with host Louisville, MT is joined by Coastal Carolina, East Carolina, Western Kentucky, Eastern Kentucky, Toledo, Cincinnati, Rutgers, Mercer, Marshall, James Madison, Bellarmine, Evansville and Lipscomb.
MTSU will field Kendall Maynard, Lanie Campbell, Nicole Johnson, Ella Manley and Abbie Lee to compete in the tournament.
THE BLUE RAIDERS
In a competitive field, the Blue Raiders finished ninth at the Bettie Lou Evans Invitational, shooting 910 throughout the three rounds.
Returning from injury, Maynard made a statement in the season opener, placing T6 after shooting her final two rounds one-under-par. The top-10 finish for the Blue Raiders was the first of its kind since March 2024, when Manley placed second at the Ozarks National Invitational.
Campbell earned a top-30 place at the Bettie Lou Evans Invitational, finishing at 227 (+11) after the three rounds. Her low round was her first, where she shot a 73 (+1), to lead the team after the first day of competition.
Johnson and Manley finished the last competition just one shot apart, with Johnson carding just below her sophomore counterpart. Johnson's low round (a 74) was shot in the final round, while Manley earned her low round in the second (a 75).
Lee will be making her season debut at the Cardinal Cup. After missing the spring season due to injury, the senior will return to her home state, ready to make a difference on the course. She competed in all 15 rounds during last fall season and averaged 75.9.
THE COURSE
The University of Louisville Golf Club will be played as a par 72 at 6,374 yards for the Cardinal Cup. The club is the home course for both the men's and women's golf programs at the University of Louisville. Most recently, it was also the home of the 2024 PGA HOPE Secretary's cup, as well as the 2022 Kentucky Boy's Junior Amateur Championship. The NCAA Division I Men's and Women's Golf Championships were held in Simpsonville in 2019 and 2021, respectively.
THE TOURNAMENT
The Cardinal Cup runs from September 13 through the 15th. Weather permitting, 18 holes will be played each day for three rounds, completing the 54-hole tournament. Friday and Saturday start times will be composed of individual tee times at the first and 10th holes. Sunday will be a shotgun start, beginning at 8 a.m. CT.
Rain is expected throughout the competition due to the remnants of Hurricane Francine. Friday has a high of 77 and a low of 62 with a 60% chance of rain. Saturday is projected to have clearer skies, with a high of 83 and a low of 64 with no chance of rain. The rain may return Sunday, with a high of 84, low of 64 and a 35% chance of rain.
