PAWLEYS ISLAND, S.C. – The Middle Tennessee women's golf team opened up the Golfweek Spring Challenge with a strong first round, sitting in fourth place after 18 holes. The lineup combined to card a 293 (+9), the lowest round total of the spring schedule for the Blue Raiders.
Abbie Lee was the lowest scoring Blue Raider of the day, carding a 72 (+1) in her first 18. Though she got off to a rough start with three bogeys on the front nine, she quickly turned things around after the turn. Carding three consecutive birdies on holes 13, 14 and 15, she got back to par, then ended just one over.
In her highest lineup start of the season, Jillian Bowman matched her career-low round, shooting 73 (+2) on the day. She kicked off her day with an ideal two-under front nine, accompanied by two birdies. The back nine proved to be more of a challenge for the sophomore, wrapping up at T14 for her opening round.
Nicole Johnson got off to a great start to her day, turning in a near-perfect 34 (-1) with eight holes at par and a birdie on the front nine. She kept her consistency going through the following six holes, though she struggled with big numbers on her final three of the day. She still sits in the top 20 through the first round, carding a 74 (+3) for T18.
Ella Manley also completed her opening round tied for 18th at 74. She got in early trouble with a pair of double bogeys, but was able to steady her round at the back nine, carding a 35 (-1) on the final holes of the round. Today's 74 is her lowest round of the spring slate thus far.
Lanie Campbell struggled to find consistency in her first 18 holes of the tournament, finishing at 82 (+11). She made the turn at 38 (+3) but found difficulty in the final half of the round, sitting at T72 on the player leaderboard.
The Blue Raiders will be paired with Akron, Morehead State and Coastal Carolina for the second round of the competition, with the first player for MT teeing off at 7:53 CT at hole 1.
