George Captures Individual Title At Two-Over Par
Blue Raider Invitational Results
MUFREESBORO, Tenn. – With a 19-over par 883 (298-292-293), Middle Tennessee has capped off the fall schedule with 29-stroke victory in the Blue Raider Invitational at their home course, Old Fort Golf Club. Middle Tennessee was followed by Troy, who totaled a 48-over 912 (306-317-289).
"It's great to end the fall with a win," head coach Chris Adams stated. "There is a lot of pressure on you when you are hosting your home tournament, but the girls played great and obviously that's evident by the amount of strokes we were able to put between ourselves and second place."
Middle Tennessee's victory is the 15th team title in school history, 10th under Adams and fourth in five years at the Blue Raider Invitational. The team 54-hole total of 883 will enter the tournament record books as the second best score in tournament history. Their second and third round scores are also to of the top 10 rounds in tournament history.
"We wanted to come in here and make a statement since we have had such a good fall, and I think we did that," Adams added. "It's always nice to end the fall on a good note with a win. This has been one of the best falls we have ever had as a team."
After finishing second in the tournament as a freshman and sophomore and losing in a playoff with teammate Emily Miller as a junior, senior Avery George has finished her last fall as a Blue Raider with a four-stroke victory at 2-over par 218 (71-69-78). Behind her on the leaderboard in a tie for second at six-over par 222 were Miller (79-72-71) and Troy's Fatima Cano (74-78-70).
The win marks the second individual title of George's career. Her 54-hole total of 218 will stand as the seventh best score in Blue Raider history, while her second round 69 is tied for the second best round in tournament history.
Following George and Miller were several teammates, as the Blue Raiders placed six golfers in the top 14. Samantha Gotcher finished in fourth place at seven-over par (74-76-73=223) while Maddie Denton placed tied for sixth at 10-over (76-75-75=226).
Jenna Burris rounded out the lineup for Middle Tennessee in a tie for 12th place with a score of 12-over (77-77-74=228). She was followed closely by Emily Williams who shot 13-over par (75-81-73=229) playing as an individual.
The final two individuals for the Blue Raiders were Hanley Long at 19-over par (80-81-74=235) and Lacie York at 43-over par (92-83-84=259).
"The golf course played very hard," Adams said. "It was harder than we're used to and that's why some of the scores are a little bit higher than normal. To have the amount of individuals that we had at the top of the leaderboard shows this was a great team performance from top to bottom."
After a break in the schedule through the winter, the Raiders will return in the spring with plenty of momentum in search of a second straight Conference USA Championship and NCAA Regional bid.
