MT Reaches 20 Win Mark
MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Middle Tennessee softball team reached 20 wins for the first time since 2010 with a doubleheader sweep over Alabama State Monday evening at Barbara Williams Softball Complex.
With the victory, MT doubles its win total from last season and improve to 16-9 in non-conference affairs.
MT (20-26) rolled past ASU in game one, 11-0, before defeating the Hornets (17-31) in the second game of the twinbill, 9-4.
Four different players hit over .500 through the two contests while Harris posted a .667 (6-for-9) average with three RBIs and five runs scored to lead the way.
Jenkins (5-for-8), Uselton (4-for-8) and Whaley (3-for-6) all got in on the action with three RBIs. Nieves plated a team-high four batters through the two contests with three hits.
Cheney and Chocallo would earn wins inside the circle, allowing a combined four runs on 13 hits as each pitched five innings.
Middle Tennessee took advantage with runners in scoring position with a .459 (17-of-37) clip from the dish when threatening to score.
The defense also stepped up committing zero errors, marking the fifth time in the past six games with at least one or no miscues.
Game One: Middle Tennessee – 11 Alabama State – 2 F/5

Eight different Blue Raiders notched a hit while four had multi-RBI performances.
MT scored nine of its 11 runs in the third and fourth innings in a contest in which ASU never threatened.
After taking a 1-0 lead in the top of the first, MT got the offense rolling in the top of the third with four runs on four hits. Birdsong led off the inning with triple followed by RBI doubles from Cortez and Jenkins in consecutive at-bats. Nieves drove in Harris after the freshman singled to left and Nieves reaching base thanks to a fielding error. Uselton then grounded out while plating Harris.
The Blue Raiders kept the momentum going in the following inning with another barrage of runs, scoring five in the fourth on six hits that was highlighted by a two-RBI single from Harris.
With the lead safe and sound, MT tacked on one more run in the fifth to give the Blue Raiders the 11-0 advantage before ASU putting two up in the final innings.
Harris led the attack going 3-for-4 from the plate and two RBIs. Jenkins then followed with two hits, two RBIs and three runs scored. Uselton and Nieves both posted a hit and two RBIs while Whaley chipped in with an RBI and two hits.
Cheney improved to 11-13 the season with another productive outing, tossing all five innings and allowing just two runs and scattered seven hits.

The Blue Raiders got off to a fast start in the second contest with three run in the top of the first frame to take a 3-0 lead.
Birdsong got the offense going with a leadoff single before stealing second. With one out after Cortez drew a walk, Harris and Nieves notched back-to-back singles that drove in Birdsong and Harris, respectively. In the next at-bat, Griffith plated Nieves with a single of her own to put MT in front, 3-0.
The Hornets did cut the lead to one, 3-2, after hitting a pair of solo shots in the third and fourth inning, respectively. However, the Blue Raiders prevented the comeback by scoring two runs in the fifth and three runs in the sixth frame.
With the bases loaded on two occasions in the fifth inning, Whaley singled up the middle to score Harris from third. In the next at-bat, Shadley came in for a pinch-hit sacrifice fly to bring in Nieves to give MT a 5-2 advantage.
The Blue Raiders widened the gap in the sixth stanza when Cortez started a string of four straight singles to begin the inning. With the bases loaded, Nieves sent a bases loaded single to right field plating Cortez, which was followed by Uselton's single to right field and Whaley hitting in Harris on a flyout to give MT an 8-2 lead.
Middle Tennessee tacked on one more run in the top of the seventh thanks to a Jenkins single that drove in Freeman from third after the junior advanced to third base off a groundout and a throwing error.
Eight different Raiders tallied a hit with four notching multi-hit games. Uselton went a career-high 3-for-4 from the plate with an RBI, Jenkins and Harris both showcased a 3-for-5 production and an RBI. Harris also scored three runs as well.
Nieves turned in two hits and two RBIs to tie for a team-best as well as Whaley with two RBIs and a hit. Griffith tallied a hit and an RBI while Shadley plated a runner, and Cortez recorded two hits. Birdsong contributed to the victory with a hit and a run scored.
Chocallo earned her fourth victory of the season after hurling five innings,allowing two runs on six hits and striking out four batters. Senior Caitlin McClure came in for the final two innings to finish off the Hornets, allowing two runs and two hits.
"We played great defense and had alot of quality at-bats today," said head coach Jeff Breeden. "Our kids brought a lot of energy to the field and I'm proud of our overall effort! We must bring the same intensity tomorrow to have a chance to defeat a very good UTC team!"
The Blue Raiders will play their final non-conference home game against Chattanooga tomorrow at 5 p.m. Tomorrow's game will mark the annual pink game promoting breast cancer awareness. The first 100 fans will receive a pink t-shirt and wristband.
