Raiders Fall in Doubleheader Against Marshall

Murfreesboro, Tenn.- The Middle Tennessee softball team dropped both game of a doubleheader with Marshall. The Raiders' (25-23, C-USA 9-10) offense could not match the Thundering Herd's (30-17, C-USA 13-7) thundering bats, as they hit eight home runs in the two game set.
In the first inning of the series Marshall jumped out to an early 4-0 lead off of three home runs. The second would be more of the same as Mya Stevenson hit her second home run of the game, and extended the Marshall lead to 7-0.
Sydney Heath recorded the only Raider hit of the game, after a seven pitch walk to Summer Burgess. Heath laid down a bunt perfectly in between the pitcher and the third baseman and reached first safely. The Raiders made three consecutive outs behind the Heath hit to strand two on and a runner in scoring position.
Marshall added five more insurance runs in the top of the fifth inning making their lead 12-0.
Corrina Dodd started the game for the Raiders, pitching four and two thirds innings, allowing 10 earned runs, on eight hits, and a strikeout. Riley Fleming pitched the final two outs of the fifth, and allowed one run, on two hits and a walk.
Game two was close early, as Marshall scored in the top of the inning, the Raiders mirrored them in the bottom.
Marshall struck first in the top of the second plating a run on an RBI single. Lexi Cushing led off the bottom half of the inning with a first pitch solo home run, tying the game 1-1. The long ball was Cushing's 14th of the season, tying the program's single season home run record which she set last season. Cushing finished the game with one hit, in three at bats, and an RBI.
Marshall took a 2-1 lead on a solo home run from Hannah Giammarino in the top of the third inning. The Raiders answered in the bottom half on a Brooke McClure single that scored Burgess from second, tying the game, 2-2. The single stretched McClure's on base streak to 20 games, and is the longest streak of the season for the Raiders.
After the third, the Raiders couldn't keep trading blows with the Herd and the lead grew to 8-2 after three more Marshall home runs.
Kailey Ahlstrom pitched all seven innings for the Raiders and allowed seven earned runs, on 11 hits, one walk, and recored four strikeouts.
The Raiders look to break their longest losing streak of the season tomorrow in the final game of the series with Marshall. Tomorrow is Senior Day and will be the last home games for Kirstyn Cuccia and Deja Portillo. First pitch is set for 12:00 p.m. CT.
