Raiders Can't Hold On Versus Southern Miss
3/7/2021 3:18:00 PM | Women's Tennis
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Middle Tennessee's women's tennis team played host to Conference USA opponent Southern Mississippi on Sunday afternoon; it would be a tough match for the Blue Raiders as they would fall 4-3 to the Golden Eagles.
It was a good start for the Lady Raiders, as they secured the doubles point thanks to a 6-4 victory on court one from the pair of Lee Barnard and Lidia Burrows, and a 6-3 victory on court two from Zani Barnard and Love-Star Alexis.
Middle Tennessee had a hard time keeping the momentum they gained from their doubles victory. Sophomore Noelle Mauro would be only one of two Blue Raiders to win a singles match. Mauro won her match in straight sets 6-2, 6-3; with Burrows being the other Lady Raider to win with a 6-4, 7-5 victory.
Southern Miss seemed to find their groove during singles, winning on three courts and tying the match up at 3-3. The final court in play was between the Blue Raiders Muskan Gupta and the Golden Eagles Stephanie Booth. Gupta took the first set of the match 7-5, but would drop the second 4-6, forcing a third set to win it all. After being down 5-1 in the third set Gupta did all she could to fight her back in it, but ultimately fell short losing the match 6-4.
The Lady Raiders will be back in action at the Adams Tennis Complex on Friday, March 12 at 12:00 p.m. as they take on UT Martin.
