MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Middle Tennessee Soccer dropped its first match of the conference season, 2-1, at WKU on Sunday night at WKU Soccer Complex.
The lone goal for the Blue Raiders (5-4-1) came from junior Jennifer Francis, the first of her career, on a header after a cross from Eleanor Gough.
Gough and junior Elizabeth Skavinsky led MT in shots with three apiece, with all three of Slavinsky's being aimed on goal.
Junior Hannah Suder played all 90 minutes in net for the Blue Raiders, recording five saves in the contest.
The Blue Raiders and Hilltoppers remained scoreless through the opening half, but two late WKU goals proved the deciding factor.
The opening period was a defensive battle on both sides of the pitch. The Blue Raiders had control early as the Blue Raiders outshot the Hilltoppers 4-0 over the first 10 minutes of play, but WKU took control to even the mark at four shots apiece through the 28th minute. WKU would get a few more looks than the Blue Raiders over the final 15 minutes of the opening half as the Hilltoppers led in shots 9-7 at the break, but the score remained scoreless heading into the locker room.
The Hilltoppers limited the Blue Raiders opportunities in the second half, keeping the Blue Raiders shotless over the first 20 minutes of the second period. WKU broke the scoreless stalemate in the 68th minute on a goal from Lyric Schmidt. Following the Hilltopper score, Middle Tennessee regained its offensive presence as the Blue Raiders outshot the Hilltoppers 5-1 through the 81st minute. However, a Middle Tennessee penalty in the box in the 82nd minute led to a second Hilltopper goal, this time from Avery Jacobsen, to put the Blue Raiders down by two with less than 10 minutes to play.
The Blue Raiders found success in the 88th minute as Francis headed in a ball from Gough to bring the game back within one, but it was just a little two late as the horn sounded to close out the 2-1 contest.
