Blue Raiders sweep Tennessee Tech and UT Southern on “Special” Senior Day
4/14/2023 7:44:00 PM | Men's Tennis
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. —Special was the word of the day at the Adams Tennis Complex on Friday. Special is the best word to describe the trio of seniors that were celebrated on Friday in MTSU's final home matches of the season.
Special is exactly what the evening was as the No. 28 Blue Raiders swept Tennessee Tech and UT Southern by scores of 4-0 and 7-0, respectively, to improve to 18-7 on the season as its' senior class had one last special afternoon in front of the Middle Tennessee faithful.
The Blue Raiders started the Tennessee Tech match by grabbing the doubles point and then having all three freshman that were in the lineup clinch the remaining three points need to win. Shu Matsuoka picked up his third win of the season, finishing first followed by Marcel Kamrowski, who improved to 13-8 on the year. Ondrej Horak clinched it on four with his team-best 16th singles win of the season.
Against UT Southern, Pavel Motl and Francisco Rocha clinched the doubles point for the Blue Raiders, giving Pavel Motl his 100th career doubles victory to which the crowd gave him a standing ovation.
In singles action, the freshman once again came through to clinch the match, as this time it was Shu Matsuoka on court six who followed Ondrej Horak and Marcel Kamrowski's points to make it a 4-0 match. Both teams played on, giving No. 76 Slump, No.125 Brostrom Poulsen and Pavel Motl another win to their credit.
Middle Tennessee celebrated its' three seniors: Stijn Slump, Francisco Rocha and Pavel Motl, prior to the start of the UT Southern match.
Slump, a native of the Netherlands, was the 2022 C-USA Player of the Year and won the conference's Freshman of the Year honors in 2019. Known for his brilliant combination of power and athleticism, he achieved a ranking of as high as No. 21 in singles, the highest for anyone in the Jimmy Borendame era at MTSU, and No. 20 in doubles, which is also highest. Following today's action, Slump has 150 overall wins.
Rocha, affectionately known as "Brock," by his teammates, was both an NCAA tournament singles and doubles qualifier as an individual and achieved rankings of as high as No. 35 in singles and No. 23 in doubles in his career. The fiery Rocha was the 2021 C-USA Player of the Year and has 165 overall wins.
Pavel Motl, regarded as one of the most dominant back-end of the lineup players in program history, partnered with Stijn Slump to achieve a doubles' record of No. 20 as aforementioned and is top five in program history in both singles and doubles victories. Motl is a two-time team captain, as voted on by his peers, and is sitting at 190 overall wins in his career following today's matches.
Head Coach Jimmy Borendame on what this group of senior's has meant to him and the program:
"When you look at how successful all three players have been, not just on the tennis court, but off it. Typically, guys stick around for four years or less with the transfer portal. How often do you see three players of this caliber stick around and stay at MTSU? The relationships with them that have come along the way are so strong. It's pretty special. It's just a once-in-a career type of thing that happens getting three players that are this good stick around so long, and obviously the results speak for themselves."
Player's Perspective: Seniors Stijn Slump, Francisco Rocha and Pavel Motl on what their careers at MTSU have meant to them
Slump: "I can't put into words what playing here, especially at home in front of this crowd, has meant to me. It's so special. I'm so lucky to have experienced it. I'm just so grateful honestly. It's something that'll be with me the rest of my life."
Rocha: "Five years ago, I didn't really know what I was getting myself into. I just wanted to continue my dream of playing tennis. I couldn't have done that without MTSU. This university and community of people mean so much to me. MTSU gave me a way to become a professional tennis player, but what I didn't realize was that it also taught me how to become a man. A thank you to this university will never truly be enough to describe what my time here has meant."
Motl: "I can't describe what it meant to represent MTSU and be around the great group of people and tennis players. It was a great experience today. We had a great crowd, just like always. We really enjoyed this last match at home."
