JACKSONVILLE, Ala. – Middle Tennessee softball (15-19, 3-5) split its doubleheader on Saturday at Jacksonville State (11-20, 1-4).
Game 1 – MTSU 6, JSU 3
Jacksonville State started the scoring with a solo homerun from the two-hole hitter in the bottom of the first inning. The Gamecocks would add another run in the second inning on a solo shot from right fielder Megan Rasmussen. The freshman's first career homerun.
The Blue Raiders were hitless through four innings before breaking through in the fifth to score two runs and tie the game. Riley Gilmore started the inning off with a double and pinch runner Bryanna Coffman would come in to score on a two-run homerun by Ansley Blevins. Her six homeruns lead the team and rank fourth overall in Conference USA.
Kamryn Carcich held the Gamecocks scoreless for three consecutive innings to allow the Blue Raiders to capture the lead in the top of the sixth. Gilmore would deliver another hit, this time a RBI single that scored Shelby Echols.
MTSU would explode for three runs in the seventh inning to seal the game. Blevins hit her second homerun of the game and Julia Garcia also delivered a two-run homerun.
In Carcich's 13 start of the season, she would throw a complete game to get her team leading ninth win. The Mississippi native allowed just two earned runs on six hits with two strikeouts. Her ninth win of the season tied the CUSA league lead in wins.
Game 2 – MTSU 0, JSU 9
Echols picked up the first hit of the game but was left stranded in the top of the first inning of game two at Jana McGinnis Field on Saturday. The Gamecocks would leave two on-base as well in the first inning that left the game tied after one.
Jacksonville State would score first in the bottom of the second inning once again on a solo homerun. Four more runs would come in to score that inning to give the Gamecocks a five-run advantage. Mary Martinez would enter the game and take over for Claire Woods.
Echols started off the third inning with a line drive up the middle for her second hit of the game but much like the first inning she would be stranded in scoring position to keep the game 5-0 in favor of Jacksonville state.
The Gamecocks would add another in the fourth inning after back-to-back hits increased the lead to six. A leadoff homerun in the fifth by Jacksonville Sates' Makalyn Kyser made it a seven-run lead.
nine strikeouts at the plate in game two by the Blue Raiders kept them scoreless in the 9-0 loss.
